I was an engineering major in college, and so I spent a ton of time in labs putting everything from circuits together to casting metal. I could dive deep into some of the complexities of engineering topics but had little to no practice when it came to writing essays.
When I entered the workforce, I quickly realized that my writing skills were subpar and below standards. I don’t need to be a fantastic novel writer, but I need to make sure that I am effectively communicating with the people around me.
Honestly, the main reason why I started this blog was to force myself to write about different topics and synthesize my thoughts.
It was never to build a massive audience.
I desperately needed to practice writing different types of essays to understand myself as a person better, but also form clearer thoughts so I can effectively communicate with everyone else.
Over the past week, I heard multiple people tell me that my writing has improved significantly. I’ve always been insecure about my writing, but posting these essays on this blog has helped me develop my skills and, more importantly, allowed me to practice.
If you’re a person that wants to become a better writer, I recommend doing the following:
- Read this tweet
- Start your blog or newsletter – seriously do it now!
- Write with the reader in mind – don’t write for yourself, but instead, someone is reading it, and would they understand this? Would this resonate with them?
- There’s a difference between business writing and essay writing
- Try out Grammarly or Hemmingway as tools to help edit and review your grammar and spelling
I’m still working on my writing skill and would love recommendations on how you improved your writing. I also appreciate hearing of any resources or courses that helped evolve your writing.
I will leave you with this last tweet from James Clear.
